Rajasthan Tours Travel » Sightseeing Safari » Camel Safari
Till you have taken a safari through the desert sands of Rajasthan you
haven't really experienced this land. The interiors of Rajasthan is grand
desert country and what is more it has not been commercialized and changed
beyond recognition, it still exists in all its pristine natural beauty,
the land, its culture, its people and traditions reminiscent of the
medieval ages, a treasure trove of discoveries awaits all those who want
to experience the adventure of their lives. Ride proud and straight into
the desert and you'll surely feel like the Lawrence of Arabia on his epic
adventure through the Sahara. Connect with the very heart of nature here
as you listen to the song of the shifting sands, see golden dunes stretch
out for miles in all directions and watch the wind re-pattern the land
before your very eyes. Rest under the shade of trees and sleep on carpets
under the star lit night sky, hear the hauntingly beautiful music of the
gypsy tribes on your way, eat freshly cooked and incredibly delicious
Rajasthani dishes for each meal and relax around a bonfire after each hard
day of riding, enjoy the luxury of the peace and quiet in this natural
surrounding. These camel safaris are hugely popular with those who want an
authentic experience, the backpackers and most foreign tourists. What is
more if you so wish you can choose to journey with a wonderfully eclectic
group of people from different corners of the world, enjoy this shared
experience as you sit around the bonfire each night and swap stories.
One of the best things about a camel safari is that it comes in many
packages, you could choose to ride for days together with all the style
and comforts of the erstwhile royalty. This VIP service would include
luxury accommodation such as fancy tents in which to retire each night,
the most delicious buffet meals, a wide variety of ice cold beverages at
all times, soft saddles, well informed guides, cultural shows including
Rajasthani folk dance and music each evening and a bonfire which you can
sit around and warm up as the desert begins to chill. If you want to
challenge yourself you could choose to ride with only the camel driver for
company and the most basic of provisions. If you want something more
middle-of-the-road, that is available as well. Ride for a short while, say
maybe half a day if you so wish or go on a more authentic safari that
lasts for about ten days, on a longer journey you can choose to go from
city to city or else ride into the deep interiors stopping only at the
quaint little villages that pepper this landscape. The weekend safaris
that last for about two or three days are also very popular.
The
sights a safari will afford you will be truly enchanting. After all the
Thar does have the distinction of being the most colourful desert in the
whole world, it even has a pink city and a blue and a gold. It is a visual
treat and every photographer's dream come true, amidst the backdrop of
burnished ochers its people stand out in their marvelous attire, women in
long swishing skirts, heavily embroidered tops and colourful scarves,
wearing chunky and ethnic silver jewellery, in fact it is not uncommon to
see women whose entire arms are covered with ivory bangles. The men mostly
wear white but on their heads are turbans in colours of jewel tones. The
desert will offer you some of the most dazzling sights, as you navigate
the crests and half moons you will come across charming little oasis and
the ruins of innumerable forts and palaces that have withstood the
vagaries of time. Step down from your steed and linger amidst these rocks
and stones, unearth their legends and learn stories of passionate warrior
kings and their beautiful, self sacrificing queens. Along the way you will
see some unique wildlife, exclusive to the desert ecology. Try and spot
the cunning desert fox, the chinkara antelope and the Indian bustard. If
you decide to ride from one city to another you will most probably be
journeying to some of the cultural and artistic hotspots of Rajasthan, the
Shekhawati region includes such towns as Ramgarh, Nawalgarh, Dundlod,
Mandawa and Churu and is famous for its artwork interestingly displayed on
the walls of its mansions and havelis. The more common safari will take
you to to the architectural ruins of Lodurva that are close to Jaisalmer,
the oasis at Anasagar, the sand dunes of the Samm and the water source of
Moolsagar. But the best thing about the safari is that the organisers
understand that its your journey and they will do everything to tailor it
as per your wishes and make it as interesting as you want.
